Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean, the three-caped land (Greek Trinacria), is commonly and rightly regarded as a stronghold of the Mafia and therefore presents an exceptional challenge for private investigators. The very mountainous region with sometimes extreme temperatures and the impressive Mount Etna massif attracts numerous tourists to its cities and villages, including many Germans who tend to appreciate rather than curse the hot, dry Scirocco wind from the Sahara with temperatures that not infrequently rise above 40 degrees Celsius. After all, Sicily’s numerous, sometimes secluded sandy beaches offer some spouses opportunities for extramarital togetherness.
With its special status as an autonomous region, Sicily and its more than five million inhabitants have certain rights of self-administration, a parliament and a regional constitution. Agriculture plays a greater role in the mild climate of the mountainous interior than in most other parts of Italy. Unfortunately, Sicily has frequently made the headlines in recent times because refugee disasters linked to vessels from Africa have repeatedly occurred off the island’s coasts. The already poor Sicilians are largely left alone with this problem by the European Union (as of May 2015).

For many holidaymakers, Sicily, with its varied landscape of mountains, steep coastlines, bays and flat sandy beaches, is a dream destination. Yet behind the sunny outlook lies concentrated organised crime. Sicilians have a hard time with “Cosa Nostra” (“our thing”), the Sicilian Mafia, which is not only active in Italy but, as “La Cosa Nostra”, has also become the most significant Mafia organisation in North America.
Sicily is the birthplace of the Italian and global Mafia, which has been conducting power and money politics through criminal offences here since the nineteenth century. Year after year, countless acts of violence and numerous murders in Sicily are attributed to the Mafia, while the exact structures and identities of the “capi” (bosses) are currently as unclear to the public as they have been for a long time. What is certain, however, is that protection rackets reach dizzying levels and that the Mafia controls the Sicilian economy. Accordingly, private investigations in Sicily must be conducted with particular discretion. The private investigator appears as a tourist or as an unassuming “ordinary” Italian and strictly avoids any points of contact with the island’s criminal structures. This makes it particularly difficult for our detectives to carry out corporate investigations in Sicily. Assignments in the field of private investigation (for example surveillance due to suspected infidelity), on the other hand, remain completely untouched by Mafia structures. With just under 700,000 inhabitants within the city limits and more than one million people in the metropolitan region, Palermo, the capital of Sicily, is by far the largest city on the island, the fifth-largest city in Italy as a whole and the cultural, economic and political centre of the region.
The economy largely consists of the service sector, which is able to thrive on tourism thanks to the fantastic location and historic building fabric. However, the port, shipbuilding, the textile industry, mechanical engineering and the manufacture of the famous Sicilian furniture are also of importance. Nevertheless, it must not be left unmentioned that Palermo has the lowest per capita income of all Italian provincial capitals. The population is poor by Italian standards.
In addition to the economy, tourism and education (the University of Palermo is one of the largest in Italy), transport plays a special role. The port serves as an international hub for ferry and shipping connections to the mainland and to Africa. Two airports are located in the immediate vicinity, and Palermo is the terminus of the trans-European railway connection Berlin–Palermo, which, however, is still interrupted by the Strait of Messina due to budget cuts. Corresponding plans to build a bridge over the Strait of Messina have been shelved for the time being.
